Best bike lock: how to choose the most effective protection in 2025?

Searching for *”best bike lock”* means you’re looking for certainty: that you’ll find your bike where you left it. Today, a poorly secured bike can disappear in seconds, even in broad daylight, even in front of a store, even in a quiet neighborhood. All it takes is a pair of pliers, a portable angle grinder, or a simple lever.

With the explosion of electric bikes, cargo bikes, and urban cycling, bike theft has become one of the primary reasons for abandoning sustainable mobility: 500,000 thefts annually in France, and 1/3 of cyclists change their habits after a theft. In summary: a poorly chosen lock can cost you an entire bike.

CactUs Lock FAQ

    • How does the CactUs Lock work?

CactUs Lock works like a metal pipe.

The lock consists of a thick, reinforced metal structure with a hollow channel at its center, running through the entire shackle.

Inside this channel is a pressurized gas containing a molecule associated with putrefaction: putrescine.

This gas is completely confined as long as the lock is not attacked.

⇒ Solid on the outside, deterrent on the inside.

    • When and how is the smell triggered?

The smell is triggered only during a cutting attempt.

When a grinder-type tool attacks the lock, it must first cut through a significant thickness of metal.

Once one-third of the material is breached, the gas is released, forming an olfactory cloud 2 to 3 meters around the lock.

The remaining two-thirds of the lock will then need to be cut to free the bike or motorcycle.

⇒ No sensors, no electronics: cutting alone triggers the smell.

    • Can it be triggered by mistake?

    No.

Shocks, vibrations, normal handling, or accidental drops do not trigger anything.

The system is designed to react only to a deliberate cutting attack.

As long as the lock is not attacked, the gas remains perfectly confined.

⇒ Normal use = no smell.

    • What happens after it’s triggered?

Once triggered, the smell is extremely persistent and difficult to ignore.

It makes continuing the theft very complicated for two main reasons:

    • Two-thirds of the lock still need to be cut,
    • The smell triggers an instinctive flight reflex, which is very difficult to control.

Furthermore, the molecule attaches to hair and tongue receptors, meaning the smell can persist for several days on the exposed person.

After triggering, the lock is no longer reusable. But its mission is accomplished: the lock has protected your bike/motorcycle.

    • What exactly does it smell like?

It smells like putrefaction (the smell of decomposing corpses).

It’s an immediately identifiable smell, very difficult to tolerate and impossible to ignore.

The human brain is extremely sensitive to it, triggering an instinctive flight reflex.

    • How long does the smell last?

In the air: from a few tens of minutes to a few hours, depending on ventilation.

On an exposed person: several days, because the molecule attaches to hair, body hair, and tongue receptors.

    • Can the smell be neutralized with a product or technique?

    No.

Currently, there is no known technique to neutralize the molecule.

Only time allows the smell to fade and then disappear.

    • What if the thief wears a mask?

To be fully protected, a gas mask would be needed, which is prohibited in public.

An FFP2 type mask is ineffective.

Furthermore, even with a mask, hair and body hair remain exposed, leading to a lasting fixation of the smell once the mask is removed.

    • Is it legal?

Yes. CactUs Lock is legal for sale and use.

The system relies on a naturally occurring molecule (putrescine), encapsulated under pressure for micro-dosed and controlled release, only in case of partial cutting.

⇒ It is not a weapon, but a passive deterrent device integrated into a lock.

    • Is it dangerous for health or the environment?

    No.

The gas is micro-dosed, and therefore presents no risk of injury or bodily harm.

It is, however, very unpleasant and systematically triggers survival instincts: strong discomfort, nausea, head aversion, recoil movements, difficulty concentrating, an irrepressible urge to flee, disgust…

⇒ It makes them flee but causes no harm.

    • Can the lock be triggered accidentally?

    No.

The gas can only be released after more than one-third of the lock has been cut.

Furthermore, the system is secured by an injection valve + a safety valve + a resin-sealed cap, all within a thick metal layer.

⇒ No shock, vibration, or mishandling can cause it to trigger.

    • Can the gas escape over time or lose effectiveness?

    No.

The gas is perfectly confined thanks to internal safety systems and does not leak over time.

In accordance with European regulations, a preventive gas replacement is recommended every 3 years.

  • What are the dimensions of the lock?

35 cm long, 18 cm wide, and 22 mm in diameter.

  • Is it certified (FUB, SRA)?

Yes. CactUs Lock is FUB 2-wheel and SRA Bike certified for V2.

  • Is it compatible with insurance?

Yes, in most cases for V2.

The FUB 2-wheel and SRA Bike certifications allow CactUs Lock to be accepted by many insurers.

For V1, it is only compatible with Sharelock, Ulygo, and Tulip. However, we recommend checking the exact terms of your contract, as each insurer has its own criteria.

  • Is it resistant to cutting tools?

Yes.

The lock is designed with a thick metal structure, intended to resist attacks, and is SRA and FUB certified, which attests to its resistance.

And most importantly: even if attacked, the olfactory system triggers before the cut is complete, making the continuation of the theft extremely complicated.

  • Is it rechargeable?

No.

The olfactory system is not rechargeable. If triggered, the lock has fulfilled its mission and must be replaced.

  • What is the weight of the lock?

2.2 kg.

  • Will you offer other sizes or versions?

Yes.

Other sizes and versions are being studied to adapt to different uses and types of two-wheelers: CactUs Lock evolves based on your field feedback, so feel free to share your wishes with us!

  • What bikes and motorcycles is it suitable for?

CactUs Lock is suitable for classic bikes, e-bikes, cargo bikes, and some motorcycles and two-wheelers.

Its large size allows for easy securing of the frame and a fixed object.

  • Where and how to attach it correctly?

Always around the frame and a solid fixed object.

Avoid securing only a wheel.

  • Can it be used indoors?

Yes, without a problem.

As long as the lock is not attacked, no smell is released.

  • Can it be used in the rain?

Yes.

The lock is designed for outdoor use, in all weather conditions.

⇒ Rain, humidity, or cold do not affect mechanical resistance or the olfactory system.

  • What to do if the lock is damaged?

If the lock is damaged or has been subjected to a cutting attempt, do not use it anymore.
